Happy Saturday everyone!! Here is the latest update on our sweet Maelyn girl. On Thursday we received a preliminary report from her pneumogram study from the nurse practitioner on call that day. The test confirmed what we already knew, that she was having multiple episodes of periodic breathing with oxygen desaturations during these episodes.
It was recommended that Maelyn be started on caffeine for treatment. This was given to her in a bolus dose on Thursday just in her bottle. She had a great night Thursday into Friday. She is eating a ton!! All the nurses can’t get over how much she is eating. (The one nurse said she is eating as much as her 3 month old nephew!) She is now up to 7lbs 10oz. Her birth weight was 7lbs 3.3oz.
On Friday we met with the Dr. and he was in agreement with the plan to administer caffeine and mentioned that we would be discussing possible discharge early this week depending on how she does. He also stated that we would likely be sent home with a prescription for caffeine and also a small pulse ox monitor to continue to be able to monitor Maelyn’s oxygen saturations at home for some time until her pediatrician felt it was ok to come off everything.
Maelyn was still on high flow oxygen through this past week and yesterday during our visit they were able to remove all respiratory support! This was a HUGE answer to prayer and brought me to tears to finally see her sweet and perfect little face with NOTHING! No feeding tube, no oxygen, no cords coming from head or getting twisted up when we hold her. The best sight!
She continues to get caffeine each day at a therapeutic dose and the plan is to check labs tomorrow morning (Sunday) to see how she is responding. Outwardly it appears to be doing amazing things for her and she has had no alarms for oxygen desaturations since being started on it and also since having respiratory support removed.
We are SO grateful for your continued prayers! They have been felt in each and every moment from Maelyn’s birth until now at 3 weeks old ❤️❤️
